Richard Waitt

Richard was born some time ago and spent the first few years of his working life as a marine engineer, helping to redistribute crude oil around the world.

Having decided that once you've seen one oil refinery in the middle of a field of sand you can reasonably claim to have seen most of them, he quit seafaring and during the last thirty-and-a-bit years he has regularly been accused of “doing things” with – or to – computers.

He’s been doing those things for both huge (for example, IBM) and tiny (one-man) businesses and most sizes in between.

His hands-on hardware and software engineering experience ranges across a wide range of disciplines including data communications, audiovisual presentation and telecommunications.

Over the years he has also been responsible for technical education, marketing communications, technical authoring and facilities management.

Richard has been involved with the Internet since before it was called the Internet.

Katharina Waitt

Kat‘s working life has been varied — from hiding in the shadows and scaring people at the London Dungeon to bronze casting as a sculptor!

However, most of her work experience is in the computer industry, mainly training people to use Microsoft, Lotus and Macromedia (now Adobe) software.

During 2001, she decided to get “properly qualified” and passed a series of web design and development exams including:

  • I Net+, a CompTIA networking and Internet qualification and

  • Master CIW Designer, a Certified Internet Webmaster e-commerce, Internet technologies and web development qualification.

Although she still likes hiding in the shadows, she's equally at home playing with the pretty colours.

Why Silkweaver?

We are often asked how/why we adopted the name of “Silkweaver”. Well …

One warm (?) summer evening in mid-2001, before we were incorporated, one of the principals (the younger one) and her friends were enjoying some early evening refreshment at their local. As frequently happens in such circumstances, the conversation drifted aimlessly around various subjects until someone asked her “Just what are you doing these days?”

The discussion that followed soon revealed that we hadn’t yet decided upon our trading style. Of course, this prompted ad hoc suggestions from around the table and eventually developed into a full-blown brainstorming session — aided by a glass or two of Guinness!

Luckily, someone thought to record the less sensational suggestions and, in reviewing them a couple of days later, “Silkweaver” struck us as completely apt:

  • “Weaver” suggests both the concept of “weaving the world wide web” and, obliquely, the industry-leading software which underlies all our website development work — Dreamweaver.

  • “Silk” suggests fine quality, which we endeavour to demonstrate in all our work. It can also bring to mind the Silk Road, the ancient trade route from the Mediterranean to central China, which was not, in fact, a single road as its name implies, but a whole network of trade routes connecting west and east — perhaps analogous to the Internet.

So there it is … that’s why “Silkweaver”. We like the name; we hope you like our work.

(The British Library’s website has an interesting few pages about the Silk Road.)
