Understanding Search Engines
Everyone wants to be number one on Google, but in many cases it just isn’t practical.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
This can be described as the process of tuning the contents of your website pages to correspond with the words and phrases potential clients for your goods or services will enter into their favourite search engine.
This however is not as straightforward as it might sound. For example, Google claim to evaluate over 200 factors when indexing a web page.
If your product or service is unusual or distinctive, or perhaps you are the only provider in your area, showing prominently in search engine results is relatively assured. But if, say, you are a plumber or electrician in a large town or city, you may be competing with hundreds or even thousands of similar businesses for a first page listing.
Long-tailed Searches
If you produce pink and blue, left-handed widgets, getting your web page in the coveted number one place is a virtual certainty. This is great if that is all you sell, but if that is only a minor product in a large range it’s not so useful.
This is called a long-tail search – a search phrase that is so rarely used that your web page may be the only one that matches the search 100%, so it must appear at the top of the results page. But will it bring you any real business?
Many SEO providers, especially those guaranteeing number one positions, in fact optimize for obscure long-tail phrases.
Our SEO Service
A standard part of our website development process is to create “search engine friendly” pages; pages that use legitimate techniques to assist search engines to index the website pages against appropriate keywords. During the website launch process, we submit your website and a list of its pages to all the major search engines.
These two services are designed to get your website off to a good start; however, SEO is an on-going process. Without regular management via an optimization programme, your pages will gradually slip down the listings.
There are many good, ethical SEO providers. Unfortunately, there are also many who promise (and charge) a lot but either deliver very little or use dubious (so-called “black hat”) techniques to artificially place your pages high in the listings, thereby risking your entire website being banned by Google, Yahoo, etc.
We can provide ethical optimization programmes either in house or via tried and tested specialist partners.
